Sleep Apnea
Did you know?
Sleep apnea affects roughly 20 million Americans, with 80% going undiagnosed for moderate or severe obstructive apnea. That's too serious to take lightly! Fortunately, there are many options for treatment which enables you to maintain getting good quality sleep!
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway gets repeatedly blocked during sleep, causing reduced or completely blocked airway. This is potentially life threatening, so be sure to get a checkup if you or a loved one are chronically feeling fatigued and not getting a good nights sleep.
Types of sleep apnea
There are three different types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Central sleep apnea
Complex sleep apnea
Treatments
Treatment options vary according to severity, which include oral devices and surgery. The most common method of treatment is through CPAP, BiPAP or VPAP breathing machines. What's the difference? While all three offer positive airway pressure, CPAP's offer a continuous stream of air; the later two offer two pressure levels - BiPAP's have the ability to lower and thus easing exhaling and VPAP's vary pressure during the breathing cycle in a series of adjustments.
